Accredited Doctors for Diving Medicals in Brisbane

If you love diving or dive as a part of your work, having your dive medical up to date is essential. Underwater diving can be an exciting experience, if done correctly, in an individual that is deemed fit to dive. However, in an individual who is not suitable to dive or if diving is performed incorrectly, it may result in serious adverse health consequences, including death.

We understand the unique needs and requirements of diving enthusiasts. That’s why we have dedicated GP’s who specialize in providing comprehensive diving medicals. Our doctors are experienced in assessing the health and fitness of individuals interested in scuba diving, ensuring they meet the necessary medical criteria for safe and enjoyable diving experiences.

At Top Health Doctors, some of our doctors have undertaken advanced training in diving and hyperbaric medicine, to ensure that your diving experience is a SAFE one.

This service is only available at Top Health Doctors Underwood. Please ring to make an appointment.

Our doctors with diving interest, are accredited by an advanced and specialised Australian medical course, approved by The South Pacific Underwater Medicine Society (SPUM) to perform BOTH:

1) Recreational Diving Medical (AS4005.1 “The SPUMS Recreational Diving Medical”), and

2) Occupational / Commercial Diving Medical (AS /NZS 2299.1).

Assessment Facilities

Our medical facility is also well – equipped to perform Dive Medicals in areas such as lung function testing (Spirometry) and Hearing assessment (Audiometry).

Spirometry Assessments

We have medical personnel who have completed additional training to perform lung function testing, using a spirometry machine. Our spirometry service is approved by the Queensland government and registered under the Coal Mine Workers’ Health Scheme. Queensland Government – Resources Safety & Health Queensland (RSHQ) – Spirometry Registration Number is P0005852.

Audiometry Assessments

We also have a dedicated Audiometry booth with the right testing equipment to conduct high quality hearing test. The hearing testing environment conforms to the strict Australian statutory requirement of AS / NZS 1269.4: 2005.

Comprehensive Diving Medical Examination

Our doctors will do a comprehensive assessment of both general risks related to compression (being underwater), breathing compressed gases, and specific risks relating to the health of each individual with the type of diving to be undertaken.

Diving may be done recreationally for your own enjoyment or professionally (as of paid employment) in a number of applications, including scientific, military and public safety roles.

Some of the commercial diving performed in Australia includes saturation diving, police diving, aquarium diving, being a diving instructor and many others.

Underwater divers are trained in the procedures and skills appropriate to their level of certification by instructors affiliated to the diver certification organizations which issue these certifications. These include standard operating procedures for using the equipment and dealing with the general hazards of the underwater environment, and emergency procedures for self-help and assistance of a similarly equipped diver experiencing problems.

A minimum level of fitness and health is required by most training organisations, but a higher level of fitness may be appropriate for some applications.

For patients with a history of breathing difficulties, diabetes, or other significant medical history, we may send you for further assessment by medical specialist, external to our practice. We may also request medical history from your current treating doctor (with your consent) to help us understand your overall diving fitness.

Our doctors who perform the diving medicals, have successfully completed the “Basic and Advanced Medical Officer Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine Course” (including the qualifying examinations), approved by The South Pacific Underwater Medicine Society (SPUM) that covers a wide range of diving and hyperbaric related health topics.

These topics include the physics and physiology of diving, inert gas narcosis, management of decompression illness, management of barotrauma, hypothermia and hyperthermia, treatment of marine animal envenomation, rescue and resuscitation of divers, oxygen and carbon dioxide / monoxide poisoning, high pressure neurological syndrome, therapeutic roles of oxygen, aural barotrauma, audiology and hyperbaric medicine, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the requirements for a therapeutic chamber, management of diving emergencies, retrieval of diving accidents, investigation of diving accidents, diving medical for both recreational and occupational divers plus many other pertinent topics.
